CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $5 million for a segment of the Coalfields Expressway in southern West Virginia.
U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall said in a news release that the funding will be used to acquire rights-of-way for the Mullens to West Helen segment.
Rahall said the funding from the TIGER IV Discretionary Grants Program underscores the highway's importance to the state's economy.
When completed, the 65-mile highway will run from Raleigh County to Buchanan County, Va.
U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller said the Coalfields Expressway will improve safety and create jobs.
