W.Va. jobless rate rises in August
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose two-tenths of a percentage point to 7.5 percent in August.
WorkForce West Virginia said Tuesday that total employment fell 2,300. The job losses included 1,400 in the service-providing sector and 900 in the goods-producing sector.
Total employment has fallen 5,300 since August 2011.
Within the goods-producing sector last month, there was a loss of 1,600 mining and logging jobs and gains of 500 in construction and 200 in manufacturing.
Employment gains within the service-providing sector included 1,100 in government, but those were offset by losses of 1,200 both in leisure and hospitality, and in professional and business services.
The national unemployment rate fell two-tenths of a point to 8.1 percent last month.
The state's unadjusted jobless rate remained at 7.2 percent.
