WEIRTON, W.Va. -- Weirton is imposing a 6 percent tax on natural gas drilling companies to protect its infrastructure and residents from potential damage.
The Weirton Daily Times says City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to approve the new business and occupation tax.
The lone opponent, Councilman David Dalyrmple, says the tax is anti-business.
Mayor George Kondik has said the tax will provide funding to repair any damage that heavy drilling trucks might cause to streets. The revenue also will help the city deal with fire and safety issues and training related to the natural gas industry.
