MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- The owner of a Martinsburg landmark says he's not too disappointed the Shenandoah Hotel didn't sell at auction.
Maryland-based Gateway Holdings wanted at least $550,000 -- the amount owner Ben Fogle still owes the bank for investments he's made in the property. But this week's highest offer was $185,000.
The 77-year-old Fogle said he doesn't want to leave his relatives with a property that's hard to manage.
He tells The Journal it's both a blessing and a curse to keep it.
The five-story building recently housed several businesses on the first floor. Its upper four floors have been closed for several years.
The lobby, dining room and ballroom have hosted several recent community functions.
The hotel opened in 1926 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
