CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Edison Electric Institute has honored American Electric Power and its subsidiaries, including Appalachian Power, for their efforts to restore power and assist other electric utilities following two severe weather events last year.

EEI, a trade organization for shareholder-owned electric companies, presented Appalachian Power and other AEP subsidiaries with the group's Emergency Recovery Award and Emergency Assistance Award. AEP received the Emergency Recovery Award for its quick response to the June 29 derecho when 1.4 million of its customers lost power.

The power company earned the Emergency Assistance Award for the more than 2,600 AEP employees and contractors who helped other utility companies following superstorm Sandy in October.

During the restoration effort, 50 percent of AEP's company and contract line employees worked to restore power for other utilities. AEP crews worked primarily in New York, New Jersey and West Virginia.

"We are so proud of the extraordinary efforts our crews and support personnel in getting the lights back on quickly and safely following these destructive weather events," said Robert P. Powers, AEP's executive vice president and chief operating officer. "Some of the crews were away form home for weeks assisting other utility companies. The sacrifices our employees and contractors made and their commitment to customers were remarkable but not surprising."
