CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department and area law enforcement agencies will host a training session about what to do in an active shooter situation.
The training, meant for office managers and employees, is scheduled for 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the Charleston Civic Center, according to a release from the health department.
Each year, 1.7 million workers in the United States are victims of workplace assaults and homicides. Homicide is the fourth-leading cause of death while on the job.
"As public health officials, we concentrate more on prevention of violence," Dr. Rahul Gupta, executive director of the Health Department, said in a statement. "What we have learned from recent events is there is no pattern to predict where it will happen next.
"An active shooting event can occur at any time or place. Preparedness and awareness are the keys to helping protect our employees, customers and ourselves."
Besides the Health Department, other sponsors of the training include: West Virginia State Police, Kanawha County Sheriff's Department, Charleston Police Department, emergency management agencies in Kanawha County and the West Virginia Board of Risk and Insurance Management.
Seating for the training is limited to 100 attendees. Advance registration is required by March 1.
