HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- CSX Corp. and the labor unions that represent 215 workers at its Huntington repair shops have signed new contracts guaranteeing at least four years of employment and preventing the railroad operator from outsourcing some work.
The State Journal reported that the deal gives CSX the flexibility to have workers perform jobs in any assigned area, regardless of job title.
The contracts were signed last week with the Transportation Communications Union, the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, and the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers.
CSX Vice President Ken Mason said it is an innovative, "win-win" contract that gives workers incentives to be flexible while letting the company improve quality, production and efficiency.
The union also praised the deal.
"This historic agreement proves that by working efficiently, railroad unions can compete with outside contractors even at higher rates of pay with superior benefits," Jeff Doerr, president of machinists union District 19, said in a news release.
Employees get a $500 signing bonus, a $1 per hour "efficiency differential" (raise), and guarantees that a certain number of employees will have their jobs for the duration of the four-year agreement.
