Radio Free Charleston -- minus the words
Advertiser

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Check out the new "Radio Free Charleston," now online at blogs.wvgazette.com/popcult. It's the third "Show Without Words" by West Virginia's only online music and video film program. While spoken words are missing, the 18-minute show is full of great sounds and clever, often striking imagery.

Host segments by show producer Rudy Panucci, shot on the state Capitol steps, are done comic-book-style with colorful panache and talk balloons. The several bizarre and clever interstitials, featuring the name of the program, are some of the show's best ever.

The showcase piece is a moody black-and-white short film titled "My Decision," by D.T. Stephenson, which features some genuinely impressive surreal editing in which open books and magazines comes alive with imagery. There also are images bursting from an open hand and sunglasses that swirl with white noise.

The show features instrumental music by David Synn performing at The Empty Glass. (Look for Synn and Stephenson's new project, Frequency Down, at local venues soon and on RFC in the future.)

There's also animation by Frank Panucci, a Plant Ro Duction Mini Movie and a brief musical tour of the Live Mix Studio in Charleston, a production partner on the program and the site of many a musical segment seen on RFC.

The show closes with an instrumental blues number by Blue Million, recorded during a sound check at Bruno's last May. See production notes on the program at the PopCult blog.
