W.Va. Symphony opens season this weekend

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra begins its 2012-13 season this weekend with world-renowned Italian pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi, who will perform the Grieg Piano Concerto in concerts Friday and Saturday at the Clay Center. Pompa-Baldi won a silver medal at the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

The orchestra will also perform Benjamin Britten's "Suite on English Folk Tune," and Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1 in F minor. Performances are at 8 p.m., with a talk by Maestro Grant Cooper about the evening's selections at 7 p.m.
