CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Director Paul Thomas Anderson's critically-acclaimed drama "The Master" opens Friday at Park Place Cinemas, 600 Washington St. E. The film, partly inspired by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, tracks the story of an uncertain, unsettled Naval veteran (Phoenix) in post-World War II America attracted to a movement called The Cause and its charismatic leader (Hoffman). It rates 85 percent fresh at review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with one critic noting that it's "a surprisingly compassionate look at two people: A lost sheep and his shepherd."
