Nitro Library closures

NITRO, W.Va. -- Nitro Public Library will be closed Nov. 6 for Election Day and Nov. 12 for Veterans Day. All other locations of Kanawha County Public Library will be open those days.

Belle Starr portrayal

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. -- Actress and storyteller Karen Vuranch will portray Belle Starr, also known as "The Bandit Queen," at 2 p.m. Nov. 11 at St. Albans branch library.

The living-history presentation of the Old West outlaw is suitable for all ages.

Meet the author

CROSS LANES, W.Va. -- Marie Manilla, author of "Shrapnel," will speak at 1 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Cross Lanes Branch Library.

The book explores the legacy of war in three generations of men from the Butler family. Manilla is a graduate of West Virginia University, Marshall University and the Iowa Writers Workshop. She has lived in both West Virginia and Texas, the settings for "Shrapnel."

Her next novel, "The Patron Saint of Ugly," was just purchased by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and will be published in spring 2014.
