Poetry Out Loud finals Saturday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia state semifinal and final rounds of the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest take place this weekend at Culture Center Theater.

Thirty students from high schools in 23 counties will compete in the semifinals from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, then the top 10 will return Saturday for the finals, which begin at 1 p.m. The state champion earns $200 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the national finals April 28-30.

At the finals, actor Chris Sarandon, a Beckley native, returns for his sixth year as emcee; West Virginia poet laureate Marc Harshman performs as does jazz duo Charlie Hunter and Scott Amendola. Charleston poet Crystal Good appears at Friday's session.
