MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The fourth annual West Virginia Mountaineer Short Film Festival is getting underway in Morgantown.

The West Virginia University School of Art & Design is hosting the competitive event through Sunday at the Creative Arts Center.

The festival celebrates innovation in film, including experimental video and animation.

Dozens of short films from around the world will be screened, including original works from Russia, Belgium, Spain, France, Germany, Ireland and Finland.

The festival also will showcase works by regional filmmakers.

Five of them will be on hand to discuss the challenges of practicing their craft in Appalachia and how film can be a form of social advocacy.

Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
