WVU adds dance major to creative arts school

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The West Virginia University College of Creative Arts has a new major -- dance.

The Faculty Senate approved the change this week, and students can enroll starting this fall.

Dance has been a popular minor for several years. But Dean Paul Kreider says professor emeritus Kacy Wiedebusch helped establish such a following that demand now supports a major.

WVU said it will be the only full academic degree in dance in the state, and that will allow more West Virginia dancers to consider staying here for their educations.

Dance and theater director Joshua Williamson said the school expects only about 10 dance majors in the first year because the approvals came so late. But there are 70 dance minors, so the number should grow in future years.
