Morgantown student wins state Poetry Out Loud competition

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Tim DiFazio of Morgantown High School won the state Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest, held March 8-9 at the Culture Center. He will represent the state in the national finals, held April 28-30 in Washington, D.C.

Poetry Out Loud, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, is a recitation program designed to encourage high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition.

DiFazio recited T.S. Eliot's "La Figlia che Piange," Robert Burns' "To a Mouse" and George Starbuck's "Sign." He received $200 and an all-expense-paid trip to the finals. His school library received $500 to buy poetry books.

Grace Pritt of Hurricane High School was runner-up. She received $100 for herself and $200 for her school library.

Others in the Top 10 were Dayja Legg, Capital High School; Katherine Vandall, George Washington High School; Tyler Hammack, Roane County High School; Sabrina Dahlia, East Fairmont High School; Zela Wyrosdick, Fairmont Senior High; Timberly Robinson, Lyceum Preparatory Academy; Amelia Sark, Richwood High School and Jalen McCrary, Wheeling Park High School.

Other semifinalists were Bronwyn Clagett, Lincoln High School; Ashley Feliz-Redman, Martinsburg High School; Caitlin Fowlkes, Winfield High School; Kristen Hensley, Chapmanville Regional High School; Dallas Hopkins, Ripley High School; Olivia Hrko, Bridgeport High School; Peyton Humphreys, Wahama High School; Sarah Jones, Wirt County High School; Jessica Kimble, Tyler Consolidated High School; Kaelyn Miragilotta, Sherman High School;

Aeesha Ranavaya, Cabell Midland High School; Madeline Richmond, Woodrow Wilson High School; Mackenzie Roberts, Magnolia High School; Anna Rubenstein, Nitro High School; Joshua Stretch, Monongalia Technical Education Center; Levi Wells, Greenbrier West High School; Autumn White, Meadow Bridge High School; Luke White, Lewis County High School; Rory Morgan Williams, Webster County High School; and Jared Workman, Spring Valley High School.
