There was never really a question of whether Michael Calabrese would play music. The question was what instrument?
Calabrese said, "My parents were both musicians. They met in a rock band, ironically called Just Friends. Dad played the guitar, and Mom was a violinist, piano player and singer."
Calabrese, who performs Sunday with indie soul/jazz band Lake Street Dive on "Mountain Stage" at the Culture Center, could have ended up playing any of those instruments, but he didn't.
"My dad got me a guitar when I was super young," Calabrese said. "I think he wanted me to be a guitar player, but I couldn't stop playing with my utensils at the dinner table. So, they got me a drum kit."
He's been a drummer ever since.
He liked rock and roll, but Calabrese said the only real outlet for him as a drummer growing up was the junior high and high school jazz bands.
