Writing couple win

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charleston writers Geoff and Karin Fuller each took a first place recently in a contest held by Writers Digest. First-place finishers receive a $1,000 prize.

Karin Fuller won for genre short fiction for a story titled "Fear of Not Flying." She also won the contest in 2008. Fuller's popular column Smell the Coffee appears weekly in the Life & Style section of the Sunday Gazette-Mail.

Geoff Fuller won first place for crime writing fiction. He is the author of "Full Bone Moon," published by Woodland Press of Chapmanville.

Bridgeport book deal

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- T. Michael Martin of Bridgeport has accepted a two-book contract from HarperCollins, a major New York publisher.

Martin, 27, has written a debut novel, "The End Games," due out in summer 2013. Set in the Charleston area, the book is described as a young-adult postapocalyptic thriller.

His second young-adult thriller is set in Bridgeport and is scheduled for publication in 2014.
