"Donna Bray of HarperCollins's Balzer + Bray imprint bought two novels by screenwriter T. Michael Martin, including his debut 'The End Games,' about two brothers braving the apocalypse in the wilderness of West Virginia, pitched as 'The Stand' meets John Green. Martin's screenplays have been developed at Kopelson Entertainment, Phoenix Pictures, and Valhalla Motion Pictures. The first of the two is due out in 2013."

Martin is a 2002 graduate of Bridgeport High School and received a degree in filmmaking from the University of North Carolina.

How to pick books

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Among its lunchtime programs, the Kanawha County Public Library's Main Library will help readers select books.

On Wednesday, the program will be "Finding Good Books: Inspirational Fiction." And on Feb. 8 the topic will be finding good westerns to read.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch to 123 Capitol St. for the programs that start at 12:10 p.m.

Hechler parodies

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Former West Virginia Secretary of State Ken Hechler has had published lyrics and poems in a booklet titled "Faith, Hope and Parody."

The 34-page booklet contains revised verses to well-known songs, such as "The West Virginia Hills." In Hechler's version, one verse goes "Oh, the West Virginia Hills/ How majestic and how grand/ But this mountaintop removal means/ We all get flat land."

The book is printed by Pictorial Histories Publishing Co. Inc.
