CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two Kanawha County students came out on top at the state finals of the Poetry Out Loud recitation contest over the weekend.
Bruce McCuskey, a student at Nitro High School, won the state competition, held Friday and Saturday at the state Culture Center. He won $200 and got $500 for his school to buy poetry books. He'll also go to the national Poetry Out Loud competition in Washington, D.C., in May.
Dayja Legg, a Capital High School student, was the runner-up. She received $100 and got $200 for poetry books for her school.
Actor and Beckley native Chris Sarandon returned for his fifth year of hosting the competition, and actress and poet Amber Tamblyn also took part.
