Friends are the focus of 'Ramona's World'
Advertiser

"Ramona's World" is the eighth and last book in Beverly Cleary's Ramona series. This summer, a movie starring Selena Gomez was made based on the books.

The three main characters in "Ramona's World" are sisters Beezus, Ramona and Roberta. Beezus and Ramona get rather jealous of each other, as siblings often do, and they both feel like they are being left out because Roberta is a baby and requires a lot of attention from their parents.

Beezus is in high school, and Ramona is in fourth grade. They both have to deal with babysitting Roberta. They also have to figure out how to get along with each other and stop having so many arguments over little things.

In the book, they both get new best friends.

For Beezus, it's Abby, a girl in her French class with whom she finds out she has a lot in common. For Ramona, it's Daisy, who helps her with her spelling and shares a lot of her interests.

Daisy defends Ramona when their classmates make fun of her for her spelling troubles. This reminded me of a quote on friendship: "Hard times don't last forever, but true friendships do."

One of the people making fun of Ramona is Susan, who Ramona doesn't like. Ramona and Susan used to be friends a long time ago, but Susan acts like Miss Priss all the time now.

Later in the book, Ramona has to invite Susan to her birthday party. There, the tables are turned and Ramona has to deal with kids making fun of Susan.

Ramona learns a lot in the book, especially that her family and friends love her although they do not show it how she wants them to. This reminded me of another friendship quote: "Just because somebody doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't love you with everything they've got."

I give the writer, Beverly Cleary, a thumbs up on "Ramona's World." If you have a sister or brother, you'll be able to relate to this book very well. And if you like it, you can go back and read the other books in the series.
