Over the summer, the Lewisburg resort, The Greenbrier got a great deal of attention for its PGA golf tournament, The Greenbrier Classic. There were many TV reports, newspaper articles, and chats on Facebook and Twitter about it.
Yet The Greenbrier has much more to offer than just golf.
When you first pull up to the front doors, you'll see the smiling faces of the employees who will take your bags and show you inside. The first things that you will notice when you walk in are a gigantic crystal chandelier and the soft, elegant green carpet.
Once you are all settled into your cozy room, you should take a walk around. You'll find a variety of little shops, a small movie theater, bowling alleys, restaurants, a calming spa, a beautifully tiled pool and the nationally famous bunker, which you can tour.
(For those who don't know, the bunker is where the United States Senate and House of Representatives would stay in times of national emergency during the Eisenhower Era.)
The shops are all set up in a quaint hallway. It almost feels like you are walking the streets of downtown Charleston. The stores vary from Yarid's Shoe Shop to a specialty kitchen store. If you are into tennis, The Greenbrier has an entire shop dedicated to tennis apparel and equipment.
Inside the kitchen store, there is a Starbucks Café, and down the hall, there is a candy store that sells homemade chocolate of every sort. Teens will love browsing over all the Greenbrier items in the gift shops. They have it all -- t-shirts, visors, golf balls, robes, dog bowls and golf shirts.

If you're tired and looking for something relaxing to do, then head over to the old-fashioned comfortable movie theater. They play a different movie almost every night, usually one that is fairly recent and generally family-friendly (rated PG or PG-13). In the back of the theater, there is a small popcorn machine and a water fountain if you need a snack.
When it is cold outside and you are stuck indoors, you can always go to The Greenbrier's indoor pool. It is decorated to match the spa next door, with its rustic looking tiles and the huge white pillars standing guard around the pool.
If you want to try something different, consider a pizza party at the pool. Room service can deliver directly to it, and there are even several dining booths set up.
While you are playing in the pool, your parents can relax at the luxurious spa to get a massage, facial, manicure and more. (You can go there as well.) The Greenbrier's sulphur springs are naturally rich in minerals, so the spa bases all its products on natural minerals.
For even more relaxation, you can even stay in a spa suite while you are visiting.
Everyday at 4:15 p.m., the Greenbrier holds a formal tea, which most people know as teatime. In one of the large rooms, attendants set up tables with platters full of sweets and pitchers full of tea. Guests can roam around and have a snack to hold them over until dinnertime while enjoying background music played live on the piano.
The Greenbrier has lots to offer for every season you go and something for every member of the family to enjoy. Now that you know where you should go for your next weekend getaway, pack your bags and have fun!
