Van football player headed Down Under

Tessarae Thompson, Scott High School
Van High School senior Travis Rose will play football in the Down Under Sports Bowl in Sydney, Australia this summer.

Travis Rose is a senior at Van High School. He has played many sports throughout the years, but football is his passion. Travis was a team captain at Van this year and led his team to the single A state playoffs for the first time in more than a decade.

This summer, he will visit Sydney, Australia, to play football. He is one of 35 players from West Virginia who have been invited to attend the Down Under Sports Bowl.

Down Under Sports was founded in February 1989 by George O'Scanlon of New Zealand, whose goal was to use the common language of sports to unite athletes from Australia, New Zealand and the United States. Tens of thousands of athletes compete head-to-head in sports like basketball, football, wrestling, volleyball, track and field, cross country and cheer and dance.

Rose will compete in the international event as part of the East Central Conference. He will travel to Australia in July and stay there for seven days. While on the Gold Coast, he will be competing for team and individual titles as well as enjoying an unforgettable cultural experience. The trip will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and Rose said he is looking forward to it.

During Rose's final season, he played defensive end and tight end for the Van Bulldogs. He had a great season and said he loved every minute of it. He is also a dedicated high school student with a GPA over 3.0. He will attend Marshall University this fall to study Exercise Science and Exercise Physiology.

In the first week of December, Rose was named Scholar Athlete of the Week by WCHS News Channel 8. He appeared in the spotlight on the webpage, and the interview aired on local news stations.

Rose said his family is his biggest support group, and they have been behind him every step of the way. He said he couldn't have achieved the success he has without their support and encouragement. Rose puts his heart and soul into all that he does, and he is a positive role model for others.
