CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- "Ripper" by Amy Carol Reeves is a historical fiction novel set in London during the year 1888. The story is told by Miss Arabella "Abbie" Sharp, who is sent by her grandmother to work at Whitechapel Hospital for Women. Not long after she starts volunteering, Jack the Ripper begins to murder patients as they are released from the hospital.
"Ripper" is a well-written book that is exciting and adventurous. Reeves keeps readers on the edge of their seats throughout Abbie's ordeal.
Even though the book is historical fiction, it adds a bit of paranormal elements to the story as well. Along with that, it uses one of the most well known figures in history to tell the tale.
Jack the Ripper was a serial killer in London during the time the book is set, and his identity was never found. That gave Reeves a chance to put her own twist on the legend.
Throughout the story, Abbie tries to solve the mystery of Jack the Ripper. No matter how much readers guess, they are unlikely to deduce all of the details of the murderer.
When I started reading "Ripper," I thought I would only read a little bit of it at a time. I was wrong, though. Once I started reading, I couldn't force myself to put it down!
In "Ripper," Reeves writes in the first person, which allows Abbie's emotions to leak through her words. The emotions Abbie feels add to the excitement and suspense.
Abbie is a tough, spunky young woman who doesn't fit in her own time very well because of her personality. Young women during her time should be quiet and happy to socialize; Abbie is the exact opposite.
Reeves is a great writer who puts readers in suspense from the first word of the book. That suspense stays until to the very last page. If you like suspense, Reeves doesn't disappoint.
If you are a fan of historical fiction, then you would enjoy "Ripper." It uses words and ideas that are accurate to the time period, including the things that go on in the hospital.
"Ripper" is also a good book for someone who enjoys mystery and action since the entire book is one big, action-packed mystery. It would also be a great read for someone who enjoys things with a paranormal twist, for that is a large part of "Ripper."
Overall, "Ripper" is a great book, and I immensely enjoyed it. I think it would be a great book for any book lover to read.
