W.Va. statehood essay, photography contests for teens
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Division of Culture and History, in cooperation with the West Virginia Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, is now accepting entries from high school students for its essay and photo contests celebrating West Virginia's sesquicentennial, which occurs June 20, 2013.
Essays must be on a topic related to the Civil War and West Virginia statehood. Photographs must be of historic sites related to the sesquicentennial. The deadline to enter is Nov. 1.
Winners of both contests will receive $1,000 cash and have their work published in Goldenseal magazine. (The teacher of the winning author will receive $500.) The best photos will be included in the West Virginia State Museum's "WV 150" exhibit set to open next year.
