Jostens visit spurs senior emotion
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- This fall, Jostens arrived at Valley for a long-awaited meeting with the seniors. Wendell Samson, the school's Jostens representative, pumped up the seniors by distributing information packets on ordering their senior items. This visit really seemed to trigger emotion in some students.
"Jostens coming to school today really makes you step back and say, 'Wow, I'm a senior!'" said Izabella Little. "I really only have a couple more months left until I go off and have to grow up. There will be no more calling Mom on my way to the bus stop, and now I'll have to do my own laundry. It's crazy!
"I'm going to miss marching band and all of my friends," she added. "I just want to stay a kid forever."
Nikki Given agreed that the Jostens visit really made it sink in that she's a senior.
"Jostens made me think of how my life is about to start, and I'm going to be on my own without my parents there to guide me through life," she said. "I haven't really thought about being a senior until today, but after graduation, I may never see any of my friends or classmates ever again and that upsets me.
"Jostens made me realize that I am happy to be graduating with the class of 2013," she continued. "This year is going to be the best, and I'm going to make sure I make the best of our senior year in any possible way I can!"
"Jostens made me realize that I actually am a senior," said Michaella Kincaid. "It didn't really seem true until today when he was talking about our caps and gowns.
"I think it's crazy how we've been with most of these people our whole lives, and after graduation, there's a good chance we will never see any of them again," she said. "I'm going to miss everyone -- some more than others -- but I am happy and sad this is my last year"
Melanie Long said, "Jostens coming to school today was a bittersweet moment. It made me realize that I am a senior and that I am on the track to graduation.
"It is exciting ordering cap and gowns and all the things that come with it, but it's also sad because after graduation, we all won't be in the same place. Jostens made me realize to take it all in and make the best of it!"
The four of them agreed that being a senior is an amazing feeling, but once you think about it, it's also kind of heartbreaking because you realize you may never see your friends again. Graduation will be the last time that the Valley High School Class of 2013 will be together all at once.
