Bidding adieu as the end of the world nears

By Nathan Thomas, George Washington High School

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Whether we like it or not, this Flipside article you're currently reading will be one of the last. We're saddened, too, but the powers that be said it was to be so.

Who are these powers that be? The Mayans. As many of you know, they predicted that the end of the world would occur on Dec. 21, 2012, making this one of the last stories FlipSide will publish.

How will the world end? Who knows really? It could end with bombs bursting or dams busting. Perhaps it will end not with a bang, but with a whimper. We at Flipside can't really predict these things. Who do you think we are? The Mayans?

Let's stop for a moment, though, and reflect on what humans did with our time on Earth. Are you done thinking?

Maybe it's just me but, wow! We really screwed up, didn't we? Look at all of those wars we started. I mean, wow. We could've done some truly great stuff if we didn't fight so much.

That's not to say we didn't do great things. I'd say the accomplishments of our Founding Fathers were pretty great. Ya know, freedom? I sort of like freedom. I'm also quite fond of motor vehicles, so thumbs up on that one, Henry Ford.

But overall, we could've done better.

We've only got a few weeks on Earth left. I don't know what you'll do, but I know what I'll do. I'll watch some movies, do some writing, hang out with those I love and tell them I love them, do some reading and attempt to be a half-decent being. So basically, I'll do everything a human should already do.

That being said, readers, we're done here. Maybe the citizens of Earth 2.0 will be better. I'll never know.

Goodbye, and goodnight.
