CHARLESTON, W.Va. - It's a brand new year, so why not try to step up your style with a new winter look to show off your brand new confidence?
The colder it gets, the more likely you are to dig into your closet for the biggest, bulkiest coats and sweaters in the ugliest, darkest colors. But why do that when you know you have great, brighter items that aren't too springy hidden somewhere in the back?
Adding a colorful blazer to a look will still keep you reasonably warm while you're out and about. I got a red one at Delia's for only $12 recently. You can also add a bright scarf to stand out in the crowd.
Another idea is to break the rules and wear white after Labor Day! If you wear white jeans with a little gold necklace or a white-and-gold striped shirt, your look becomes more chic than seasonal mishap. Even a white coat will make you look bright as snow.
For a lazy day, consider the wise words of Coco Chanel: "Never leave the house in sweats. A girl must be prepared to meet a dashing stranger or an old enemy." Why not try wearing your favorite pair of skinny jeans and a tribal print long-sleeve top instead? That will make a statement without too much effort. Or even find a sweatshirt that has a patterns or design on it; that's better than looking like you just stepped out of the gym.
For a fancier evening out, it is hard to find a dress or stylish top to keep you warm. Long-sleeve maxi dresses in darker colors can be a great solution, though. If you wear them with booties or clogs, it makes the boho look really stand out, but in a good way.
When it comes to accessories, if you're like me and your purse carries everything from silverware to swim goggles, then a bag is always necessary. For now until March, I recommend getting a big statement bag in a print like leopard, cheetah or whatever suits your wild side! You can find these purses at stores like Wal-Mart and Macy's in name brands and generic.
My favorite hats to wear when it is cold are beanies. You can let them flop down on the back of your head when you're indoors and if it is warm out, or if it is cold, you can pull them over your ears. They are great for almost any occasion and pretty cheap. Plus, they come in a variety of colors and patterns.
There are plenty of ways to stay warm and fashionable this winter. Don't let the season drag your sense of style down with the temperatures.
