Your guide to surviving spring fever and senioritis

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- It starts with something small. You skip reading your history homework to watch some television, and pretty soon, you find yourself up at 2 a.m. writing an English paper on a book you only read the first 10 pages of. Your math homework sits unfinished. Forget about studying for that chemistry test tomorrow.

If these symptoms sound familiar, you may be suffering from the affliction known as spring fever.

As winter drags on, it can be hard to get ready for school and stay awake in class. When the weather warms up, students are renewed with a new burst of energy. Unfortunately, this energy may manifest itself less in schoolwork and more in avoiding schoolwork. Additionally, many second-semester seniors may come down with a case of senioritis.

But, if you have spring fever or senioritis, all is not lost. With these few simple steps, you can keep your grades up and have fun doing it!

1. Don't stress yourself out

Stressing out over schoolwork is counterproductive. Do not be afraid to take a break to decompress after school. A short nap or an after-school snack can help you recover from the stress of the school day and prepare you for your best studying efforts. Focus on what you can do, and do not get angry with yourself when you do not do as well as you would like.

2. Balance extracurricular activities with schoolwork

Work, sports and clubs can cut into your homework and study time, but with a little planning, you can make time for the things you need to do. If you know you have an extracurricular event the night before a big project is due, work on the project a little bit every day in advance to avoid running out of time. Block out time for homework on your schedule just as you would block out time for anything else.

3. Keep a planner, and do not procrastinate

When homework and projects are assigned, write them down. Write down test dates, so you do not forget to study for them. You can also use your planner to keep track of extracurricular activities. If you are suffering from senioritis, you can use it to make a countdown to graduation. When you have things written down, it is easier to remember them and not procrastinate.

4. Eliminate distractions

If you find yourself constantly checking your phone while working on your math homework, try putting your phone in another room. Or tell yourself you can only get on the Internet after you've done a certain amount of work, then set a timer for yourself so you do not spend more time than you should on break. Record TV shows that conflict with your homework time and watch them later.

5. Motivate yourself

When you feel your motivation for doing schoolwork waning, set motivational goals for yourself. When you finish your homework, watch a favorite TV show or read a book for fun. When you do well on a test, celebrate with something you enjoy. Allow yourself to feel good about your success.

6. Join a study group

If a particular class is giving you problems, try joining a study group. See if your teacher holds study sessions after school or at lunch. If you are having trouble in a class, chances are other people are, too. Talk to other people in your class about studying together once a week or before tests. Coordinate with a friend who you can call when you have a question about an assignment.

7. Get enough sleep

Teenagers require about eight-and-a-half to nine hours of sleep a night to fully function. It can be hard to do well in a class when you are falling asleep in it. Do your homework early, so it does not interfere as much with your sleeping time. If you are a night owl, keep an eye on how late you stay up.

8. Keep a positive attitude

If you are having trouble in school, do not let it get you down. Keep working at it, and do your best. Remind yourself that you can always do better on the next test. Give yourself a chance to do better, and do not compare your own success to the success of others.

With these steps, the battle against spring fever and senioritis can be won.
