Ubisoft's "Rayman" series has always had a loyal following, but 2011's "Rayman Origins" has helped to reinvigorate the platform game genre. Now "Rayman Legends" has been unleashed, and everyone's favorite limbless character takes up ... err ... arms against a new enemy.
Although the storyline is very basic, it provides enough incentive to tie the vast amount of content together. When five traitorous Dark Teensies kidnap the lovable friendly Teensies, their world starts transforming into nightmares. Only Rayman and his vast collection of buddies can traverse the dangerous levels, save the Teensies and restore the world to its former glory.
While the platforming game play may seem nearly identical to the last game, it definitely requires more precision. Don't be surprised if you frequently miss-time jumps or fall to your doom simply because you tapped the analog stick at the wrong time. With the increased difficulty, smoothly completing levels without mistakes makes me feel as warm and fuzzy on the inside as Rayman is on the outside!
Additional content is provided in the form of musical levels, which are unlocked after a regular level is conquered. Musical levels require players to time their jumps and attacks to the tune of different well-known songs. Not only is this style of game play very inventive, but it's also extremely fun!
Even more variety is added by levels that contain minor stealth or projectile combat elements as well as occasional boss battles. In addition, there are several rebuilt levels from "Rayman Origins" and daily level challenges with online leaderboards. There's even something for sports fans in the form of a 2D football game.
Levels can be replayed to unlock additional characters and find hidden Teensies, beaten stages provide Lucky Cards, and trophies are awarded to those who win online challenges. But despite the plethora of rewards, "Rayman Legends" is a game most will play simply because it's fun!
