Wheelchair-bound teen doesn't let disability get her down

"I would rather die than be in a wheelchair."

This is exactly what I heard one day recently while sitting in English class. It was pretty obvious the student was talking about me since he kept glancing in my direction.

I commonly feel like an outsider when I push myself down the hallway at school. The key is learning to deal with my disability. So what if I'm different?

I have been in a wheelchair since I was 5 years old due to a car accident. Being young, adjusting to life in a wheelchair was pretty easy.

Growing up in my hometown, it wasn't difficult to adjust to the situation either, since everyone knew my story. However, when I moved to Charleston, everything seemed to change. I felt as if people looked at me as if I was from another planet.
