CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Teenage motherhood affects a number of people, not just the mother herself. Among the other people affected is the teen's own mother, who will become a grandmother.
When a Fayette County teen became pregnant, her mother knew how hard motherhood is and how hard it would be for the teen. She wasn't pleased, but she was supportive.
"At first, I was sad because I knew it was going to be a hard road for her, but I wasn't surprised," the mom admitted. "I think it brought us closer together. It was stressful, don't get me wrong, but I think it was a blessing in disguise."
Since motherhood is the road her daughter chose, she is being supportive. Her daughter didn't consider an abortion or putting the baby up for adoption, and she didn't consider suggesting these things.
"Adoption or abortion never crossed my mind because I knew she couldn't do it, and I knew she had enough support. When I got pregnant with her, people pressured me to give her up, and I knew how hard it was for me to even consider it. I didn't want her to have to feel that," said the woman, who was a teen mom herself.
Most people say that being a grandparent is a wonderful thing. However, it may not seem like it in the beginning.
"I was pretty depressed at first," admitted the grandmother. "But as soon as I saw [my granddaughter's] face, I didn't care a bit.
"I had a problem with not being the mommy and instead being the grandmother," she said. "It was a hard transition, and it took a while to separate the two, but I finally have it down pat. I love spoiling her, then sending her home!"
In the beginning, the teen mother was living with her mom. When she moved out, the woman didn't take it very well at first.
"I cried nonstop for about two weeks straight. I felt like my heart had been ripped out," she recalled painfully.
"After we were able to get her transportation and she was able to come and see me whenever she wanted, I'm OK with it now," she added, noting that this has actually been good for their relationship.
Not only did this mother have to deal with her baby girl getting pregnant with her own baby girl, she also recently had to face the news of her daughter getting pregnant again.
"I wasn't surprised when I found out, but I wasn't very happy," she admitted. "My daughter has her hands full with her 15-month-old, and now it's going to be even harder."
