CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Is your cheerleading squad ready for the regional tournament? It better be because Saturday is the day!

The Region 4 competition for classes A-AAA begins at Parkersburg South High School at 10 a.m. Many schools will be attending, such as Buffalo, Herbert Hoover, Hurricane, Nitro, Poca, Scott, Sherman, Sissonville, Tolsia, Tug Valley and Winfield. (The rest of the Kanawha County schools are in Region Three, which competes at Riverside.)

This is an enormous event for the cheerleaders of Scott High School. The squad has been the Region 4 Class AA runner-up for the past two years. The top two teams in each class in each region advance to the state championship, held in December at the Charleston Civic Center.

Scott advanced to the state tournament for the first time in school history in 2009 and placed fifth. After that, the town of Madison lined the streets, cheering with the girls. There was even a small parade to celebrate.

Last year, the squad placed fourth at States. This year, the girls and their coaches are looking to win the competition. They've been practicing every day after school and on occasional weekends, and feel confident they will succeed in their goal.

The 2011 Skyhawks varsity squad consists of freshmen Amber Berry, Meredith Howell, Jessica Justice, Madison McCloud and Samantha Tulley; sophomores Jamie Blosser, Haylea Donevant, Abbey Duffey, Samantha Harrison and Maggie Lester; juniors Katelynn Clark, Haylie Damron, Ashley Johnson, Cherrikah Mayhorn, Kellian Strange and Maggie Sumpter. Seniors Whitney Browning and Paige DeHart are as co-captains.

The coaches are Amanda Light and Carrie Hager. Light has coached cheerleading for 10 years, five of them at Scott. Hager has coached cheerleading for three years at Scott High School.
