Two state semifinal rounds took place March 2. Twenty-one students from 21 high schools in 17 counties competed. Ten students advanced to the state finals March 3 at the Culture Center.
Judges for the West Virginia finals were Colleen Anderson of Charleston, Nikki Bowman of Morgantown, Kate Morris of Hurricane and Deborah Stiles, an Elkins native.
West Virginia native and actor Chris Sarandon served as emcee.
Poetry Out Loud is a program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The program is designed to encourage high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition.

Summer theater auditions
MABSCOTT, W.Va. -- Theatre West Virginia will hold auditions for its summer historical dramas from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at its Mabscott office, Spruce and Whitestick streets.
TWV is casting for its three shows "Honey in the Rock," "Hatfields and McCoys" and "Rocket Boys: The Musical." The season runs from May 21 to Aug. 16.
Those auditioning should prepare 16 bars (30 seconds) of an up-tempo musical number, 16 bars of a ballad and a one-minute contemporary monologue. Prerecorded accompaniment is needed; there will be no accompanist. A headshot and résumé are required.
