BECKLEY, W.Va. -- The Beckley Art Group's Members Exhibit 2012, "It's Out of Our Hands," can be seen at the Cynthia Bickey Art Gallery through May 6.
The annual exhibit reflects the talents of the fine art and craft artisans of the group, and all works are for sale. The exhibit is sponsored by LA Gates Co., Moore Insurance Services, Dr. Michael Webb, Rock & Coal Construction and Wells Fargo Advisors.
The group will sponsor "Great Mandala For Peace," organized by Suraj Gurung, with an opening ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday. Sponsored by Mountain State University, there will be international hors d'oeuvres served with tea, compliments of the MSU culinary department. View the progress each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A closing ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. April 21.
A sand mandala, unique to Tibetan Buddhism, is drawn and then filled in with colored sand. The finished mandala is consecrated and, having served its purpose, is swept up and dispersed into flowing water.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts presents artist member Deborah D. Herndon's "Architecture Talks: Doors & Details from Europe and America" exhibit in the Center Members' Gallery during the month of April. This solo exhibit will run through April 29.
Herndon's images "freeze frame" architectural details to reflect the culture of the hands that created them. "The metallic print process I use saturates color slightly and adds a third dimension to draw in the viewer," she said in a news release.
She said her interest in architectural details and cultural artifacts stems from her educational background in anthropology and sociology and urban planning career. Her current show contrasts architecture in different parts of France; Barcelona, Spain; and cities of Belgium with some unique American locales.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Division of Culture and History has unveiled a new exhibit, "Portraits of Historic West Virginia Figures," the fourth and final installation in the "Inspired: A West Virginia Series of Juried Exhibitions" at the Culture Center. The show is in the West Virginia State Museum through Aug. 26. The show consists of 29 works by 20 artists in the areas of painting, print/drawing, photography, mixed media and crafts.
Mary Gray, director of the Riffe Gallery for the Ohio Arts Council, in Columbus, Ohio, served as juror for the show.

Genealogy talk
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charles Ledbetter will present "Lessons Learned by a Lay Person about the Joys and Frustrations of Genealogical/Historical Research" at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center. The program is free and open to the public.
Ledbetter will relate some of the pitfalls he has found in researching the history of individuals and organizations and will share the lessons he has learned from that research. He will discuss online genealogy programs; working with librarians and archivists; using census data and official documents; conducting interviews; translating the language of the past; and interpreting myths and stereotypes. He also will reveal specific examples of lessons learned in his research of black Americans and American Indians.
Ledbetter is the vice chairman of the state Archives and History Commission. He has a doctorate from Kent State University. After retiring as a lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Army, he spent almost 30 years at West Virginia State University, retiring as professor emeritus in education.
Ledbetter is the author of three books and a number of articles.

Art Expo and Sale
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The fifth annual Art Expo and Sale will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 29 at the B'nai Jacob Synagogue, 1599 Virginia St. E., and hosted by the Ladies' Auxiliary.
Exhibitors and authors include The Koenig Art Emporium and artist Traci Higginbotham; artists Don Ashworth, Jo Anne Jacobs, Debbie Sisson and Jeanne K. Cochran; photographers, Attish Baidya, Laura Maul and Sheila Caim; artist and jewelry designer Damienne Dibble; jewelry designers Charlotte Pritt and Lori Saas; woodturning by Stan Cook; woodworking by Andy Sheetz; pottery artist Randy Selbe; and jewelry designer and doll makers Jo Brewer and Kathy Petrella. Fabric artist and weaver Valerie Asbury from Lexington, Ky., will present a weaving project for children.
Authors include Aila Accad, Lynn Clark, Harry Peck, Ruth Kirk and more to come. Cookbooks will be available from both Ladies' Auxiliary, "Still Cooking at One-Hundred," and Temple Israel's newly published addendum to a previously published edition.
A lunch menu of soup, wraps, chips, fruits and drinks will be available through the Shape Shop of Charleston. Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the event for artwork and books from specific exhibitors. Winners do not have to be present to win.
