'Fine Arf!'
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- To celebrate Huntington's win over 15 other cities vying for the $100,000 Pet Safe "Bark for Your Park Contest" and the June 16 ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new dog park, the Huntington Museum of Art will present an exhibition featuring images of dogs from the museum's permanent collection through July 22.
A guided tour of "Fine Arf!" will take place June 26 at 7 p.m. during the Fourth Tuesday Tour. At the same time, nature docents will give a guided tour of the nature trails, where visitors are welcome to bring their dogs on leashes. Weather permitting, refreshments will be served outside following both tours. Attendees are encouraged to bring pet supplies to be donated to Little Victories.
The works on exhibit in "Fine Arf!" span five centuries and portray the relationships between humans and their canine companions. Many different types of dogs are depicted in a variety of media including oil paintings, watercolors, sculptures, prints and decorative art objects. Each image will be accompanied by a famous quote about dogs.
Visitors to the Huntington Museum of Art Facebook page can post photos of their favorite dog. These photos will be added to a photo album on the museum's Facebook page.

The show will feature color and concept as a central aspect. Both abstract and figurative works will be included.
The artists have had numerous solo exhibitions around the country and are included in many private and public collections such as The Spectrum Group (Johnson & Johnson Inc.), Roanoke, Va.; Boston Public Library, Boston; Davis Museum, Wellesley, Mass.; Neiman Marcus, Boston. Berlin is the recipient of a NEA Fellowship Grant for Work on Paper. Groot is known for her commissioned works in public places, including Ohio's Port Columbus International Airport and Toledo Children's Hospital.

The Clay Center will once again offer free gallery admission to all active-duty, National Guard and Reserve military personnel and their families through the Blue Star Museums program.
Running through Labor Day, the program is a partnership of Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The center also will offer discounted prices of $2 to planetarium shows and $3 to giant-screen films.
Huntington Museum of Art has a policy offering free museum admission to active-duty military personnel and their families indefinitely, inspired by participating in Blue Star Museums in the past.
The free admission program is available to any bearer of a Geneva Convention common access card, a DD form 1173 ID card or a DD form 1173-1 ID card, which includes active-duty military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard), National Guard and Reserve members and up to five immediate family members.

'Mega Square Meal'
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Arts Council of Kanawha Valley, in conjunction with FestivALL, will host the "Mega Square Meal" for visual artists only, from 2 to 4 p.m. June 24 at Bridge Road Bistro. This session will be part artist grant/part fundraiser for the organization. The event is co-sponsored by Mountaineer Montessori School.
Eight visual artists will give four-minute presentations. Three grants will be awarded -- the main pool grant (amount to be determined by the number of guests), a second grant ($300) and a third grant ($100).
The Square Meal is a grass-roots model for funding small- to medium-size creative projects through community meals. A group of people come together to share a meal at an affordable price. All the income from that meal is given as a grant to support a creative project. Grant applications are accepted up until the deadline; everyone who purchases the meal gets to vote on who receives the grant. The grants are completely unrestricted and will be awarded at the discretion of the customers.
Winning proposals have eight months to complete aspect of proposal and report back via video on the micro grant.

The proposal review panel will be composed of city officials, members of the Charleston Beautification Committee, community members and members from each of the arts. Malden history
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- "Old Malden" will be the topic for a free lecture at 6 p.m. June 5 in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center.
Lawyer and local historian Larry L. Rowe will talk about the unique heritage of Malden -- as a frontier industrial center, enslaved people worked and were housed alongside white employees.
This history centers on Booker T. Washington, whose early life in Malden set his belief in hard work, family life and middle-class values.
Rowe is a graduate of the West Virginia University College of Law and has a master's degree in public administration from WVU. He served two terms in the House of Delegates and one term in the state Senate.

ELKINS, W.Va. -- The Randolph County Community Arts Center is accepting submissions to its 11th annual Gala Juried Art Exhibition to be held Sept. 7-27.
The deadline for entries is a postmark date of July 6. The exhibit is open to all artists over 18. Original two- and three-dimensional works completed since January 2009 and not previously exhibited in the Great Hall of the arts center are eligible. Acceptable media include painting, sculpture, photography, clay, fiber, wood, glass and metal. More than $1,000 in prizes will be awarded.
Michael Christie, of Lewisburg, is the juror for the exhibit. He was artist in residence at The Greenbrier resort from 2009-2011.
