Music theory class
As part of the ongoing "Artist Factory" series of workshops, the Arts Council of Kanawha Valley will host a music theory class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 21 at the West Virginia State University Economic Development Center, 1506 Kanawha Blvd. W.
Cost is $25 and includes lunch.
Students will learn how to form and use chords, how improvised solos relate to chords, modes and moods of music and how to apply music theory to jazz and blues improvisation.
Instructor is McDonald Cary of Blue Notes Music Academy.
Space is limited. Registration is required and closes July 19. Minimum attendance is five students. Register at www.artskv.org/sign-up, where credit/debit cards, checks and PayPal accounts are accepted.

FestivALL Charleston seeks applications from artists for a commission of utilitarian public art, Artist Designed Refuse Containers. The installation site will be along the riverside sidewalks of Kanawha Boulevard between Haddad Riverfront Park and Magic Island. Members of FestivALL's Public Art Selection Panel will review the qualifications of the artists who apply and finalists will be interviewed by the panel. One finalist will be asked to return for a public event to present the selected designs. The FestivALL Public Art selection panel, with input from the public, will chose one design from one artist to be awarded the commission.
Applications are due Aug. 31. This project is open to all qualified artists 18 years or older and are U.S. citizens or legal residents. A $1,000 commission will be awarded for the selected design. The artist is responsible for working with the Project Team to adjust selected design to meet fabrication specs and approve final design before fabrication begins. Artist is not responsible for fabrication, CAD designs, painting or installation.
There is no specific theme requirement. This is an open design call. A public meeting to discuss applications and questions will be held from 6-7 p.m. Aug. 2 at the West Virginia State University Economic Development Center at 1506 Kanawha Blvd. W.

Ballet art awardsThe Charleston Ballet and Allied Artists of West Virginia announced the winners of their live studio drawing partnership from the May 17 ArtWalk.
Judges, Jeff Pierson, director of Arts, West Virginia Division of Culture and History; Rob Cleland, artist; and Dick Allowatt of The Arnold Agency selected "Best Artwork." Images of art pieces created during the live drawing class were posted on the Allied Artists Facebook pages to vote for viewers' favorites for the People's Choice Award, according to Sandra King, Allied Artists president.
Kim Pauley, artistic director of the Charleston Ballet, presented the awards at the dance troupe's performance in June during FestivALL.
Sandra King was awarded "Best Artwork" for her painting, "The Barre," and a $250 Charleston Town Center Gift Card. Dawn Combs received the People's Choice award of a $100 gift certificate at The Art Emporium for her painting, "The Couronne."

Photography at the Clay Center
Two new photography exhibits are on display at the Clay Center through Sept. 16.
"Artist to Icon: Early Photographs of Elvis, Dylan and the Beatles," organized by Experience Music Project in Seattle, features black-and-white photos of three music icons, just before the world knew them as legends. See how the influences of these 49 photos not only defined the image of the musicians, but of rock 'n' roll itself.
"The Edge of Vision: Abstraction in Contemporary Photography," organized by Aperture Foundation of New York City, focuses on contemporary photography and the force of abstraction. Explore light, color and form in this exhibit featuring 20 international, contemporary artists.

Photographer's favorites show
LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- Photographer Steve Payne's work is on exhibit in a show in The Auditorium Gallery at Carnegie Hall.
The Favorites Show features a small selection of Payne's top sellers over the past 10 years, plus a few that he loves, that haven't quite lived up to his expectations.
"You never know what people will respond to," Payne said. "Many times, I'm over the top about an image, and then it just doesn't get quite the response that I expect in terms of popularity, but that's OK. It's a give and take thing and the main point is to share your vision of what moves you."
Payne, a Charleston native, has been photographing the mountain state for more than 25 years. All of the photographs in this exhibition, except one, are of West Virginia.
The exhibition runs weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and during weekend performances through Aug. 25.
