Symphonic fellowship

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Applications are being taken for the Andrew and Amy Vaughan Student Symphonic Fellowship. West Virginia instrumental music students in grades 9-12 are encouraged to apply through the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra by Nov. 16.

Selected fellows will sit alongside WVSO musicians in rehearsals for the second half of the symphonic concert season and will conduct personal research about the music being performed. They will meet guest artists and interact with Maestro Grant Cooper. The program takes place primarily outside school hours from January through May.

Candidates should be serious instrumental music students whose primary instrument is part of a modern symphony orchestra.

Applications were mailed to all West Virginia public and private high schools in October and are also available at www.wvsymphony.org/education/fellowships-and-competitions.

Phone photos

LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- Carnegie Hall will celebrate phone photography next year with a juried exhibit.

"Phone-ography: Beyond the Talk" will be an exhibition of work by artists with a knack for artistic expression through phone technology.

Interested artists are encouraged to submit photographic images taken with and processed on a mobile phone device to Carnegie Hall by Nov. 16. Website building workshop

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Dates have been changed to Nov. 7 and 8 for the workshop for artists on how to use Wordpress to build their own websites.

Josh Dodd, co-owner of Mesh Design & Development, will teach the workshop, which will take place each day from 6 to 8 p.m. at the West Virginia State University Economic Development Center, 1506 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston.

Registration and $40 payment are required by Nov. 5. A free software download is required before class. Must have a laptop to participate. Register at http://artskv.org/sign-up.

Law for artists

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A seminar geared toward artists will teach the basics of intellectual property law, including copyrights, trademarks, service marks and common-law intellectual property in the United States.

Robert Bandy and Kevin Levine will present the seminar from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the West Virginia State University Economic Development Center, 1506 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston.

The information presented will be related to literature, film and music, but is open to any artist of any medium as the presenters will answer questions.

Dance in Lewisburg

LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- "This Moment is Now," movement theater and dance performances, will be presented by Trillium Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10 and at 3 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Lewis Theatre, 113 N. Court St.

New creative short pieces by five choreographer-directors will be performed by professional and community performers. Advance tickets are available online or at the box office. Advance tickets are $13 for adults, $8 for students and AmeriCorps. Add $4 if purchasing tickets at the door.

A meet-the-artists reception will take place after the Nov. 9 show. Advance ticket holders are invited to attend the Nov. 8 dress rehearsal.
