The Arts Commission serves as a citizen advisory board to the division. The group provides guidance in the establishment of a state arts plan, and approves and distributes grants in aid and awards from federal and state funds. The division is an agency within the state Department of Education and the Arts.
Carnegie Hall exhibits
LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- The galleries at Carnegie Hall will showcase a new collection of regional artists through Dec. 21. Paula Clendenin's exhibit, "Then and Again," will be held over in the Museum Galleries. A photographic exhibit by Mark Trent, "Southern Exposure," will hang in the Auditorium Gallery.
Come out for all the festivities of First Friday in downtown Lewisburg and be among the first to see the new exhibits. The galleries at Carnegie Hall are open and free to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Many of the works are for sale. The purchase of artwork exhibiting at Carnegie Hall benefits the artist and the Hall.

Square Meal winner
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The recent Square Meal winner of a $530 for Arts in Education Grant is Mountaineer Montessori School of Charleston.
The junior elementary class will produce a dance performance that explores the energy and lifecycles of local plants and animals, to be presented this spring in a public auditorium. The students will be dressed in black with LEDs sewn into the fabric. The light patterns on their costumes will depict the plants and animals in the story.
The next Square Meal will be in January. At the event, participants will take part in a basic meal together, listen to proposals to receive arts funding, and then vote on which group receives a grant.

Graphic designer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Manhattan graphic designer Andrew Shea will present a visiting artist lecture at 5 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Creative Arts Center, on the Evansdale campus of West Virginia University. The event is free.
Shea is a multidisciplinary graphic designer and writer. His projects have involved designing identities, motion graphics, websites, exhibition graphics and publications. He also teaches design courses at Maryland Institute College of Art, Fordham University and Parsons the New School for Design.
His recent book "Designing for Social Change" was published by Princeton Architectural Press and features strategies that can help community-based graphic design projects become more effective. It includes 20 projects from around the country.
Preservation deadline
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The state Historic Preservation Office has extended the deadline for Survey and Planning grant submissions to Nov. 9.
About $80,000 will be awarded for preservation efforts. State and local government agencies, nonprofit organizations, for-profit organizations and firms, and educational institutions are qualified to apply. Grant funds are awarded on a matching basis.

Kaufman exhibit at HMOA
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Charleston artist Barrie Kaufman will lead the gallery walk through a Curator's Choice exhibit of her recent and not-so-recent paintings and prints at the opening of "Mr. Fitz," at the Huntington Museum of Art.
The opening starts with the walk at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 9, 60 years to the day when the museum first opened its doors in 1952.
The exhibit will feature 120 works from the Herbert Fitzpatrick collection, the museum's largest and most diverse collection.

Miniatures exhibit
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Renaissance Art Gallery will host an opening reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 4 for the 12th annual National Miniature Exhibition for artists and the public.
With 70 artists, it is the gallery's largest miniatures show. There are more than 200 pieces of fine art ranging from oil paintings to sculptures, all small enough to hold in the palm of a hand.
The show will run until Dec. 9.

Collage and assemblage
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two local residents, Mark Tobin Moore and his wife, Donna J. Whitten, are included in the Collage/Assemblage Centennial 1912-2012 Exhibition, and art works by both have been accessioned into the permanent collection of the International Museum of Collage.
Moore teaches art for Concord University at the Erma Byrd Public Higher Education Center, Beckley, and has a master's degree in painting and printmaking from Marshall University. He earned an MFA in painting at WVU. Whitten is employed at J.B. Akers Law Offices, Charleston.
Lecture on 1942 champs
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The surprise 1942 WVU win at the NIT basketball tournament will be the topic of a talk Nov. 8 at the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center.
The talk by Patricia Richards McClure, of Charleston, is free and will begin at 6 p.m.
While researching material for biographies of veterans whose names are inscribed on the West Virginia Veterans Memorial, McClure discovered a number of relationships and coincidences among a small group of World War II veterans, all with connections to the 1942 basketball team. Her lecture will focus on the unprecedented commitment of all the members of that team to the global conflict, including the coach, Dyke Raese, and the player who sunk the foul shot that gave WVU the lead in the championship game, Roger "Shorty" Hicks, of Moundsville.
McClure is a former associate professor of English at West Virginia State University. As a volunteer for Archives and History, she researches and writes profiles of West Virginia veterans, specializing in the World War II-era combatants.

Public comment meeting
ELKINS, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Commission on the Arts will hold its annual public comment meeting from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 14, at the Randolph Community Arts Center, Park and Randolph streets, Elkins. The meeting is free and open to the public.
The purpose of the meeting is to give citizens the opportunity to address members of the commission and to make recommendations related to the arts programs administered through the arts section of the state Division of Culture and History.
Information may be presented in writing or in person. Presentations are limited to 10 minutes per speaker. A copy of the comments must be submitted at registration.
Written remarks should be mailed by Nov. 9 to the Division of Culture and History, Arts Section, Culture Center, 1900 Kanawha Blvd. E., Charleston, WV 25305.
