Art Notes: Sept. 30-Oct. 6, 2012
This is an overall view of "Fortune Patch" by Rebecca Gilbert, now on exhibit at Birke Gallery in Huntington.
The quilt will include 55 squares, with a handmade square representing each of the state's counties. The finished quilt will be a feature of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History's WV150 display at the Culture Center.
Quilters should contact Renee Margocee who will accept applications for each county on a first-come, first accepted basis. The 6-inch squares must be completed and received by Dec. 15.
"Each quilter may select any pattern for the 6-inch square that he or she is submitting," Margocee said. "In keeping with the statehood theme, we encourage them to consider a West Virginia or traditional theme, but are not limiting their choice of pattern." Pieced and applique patterns are acceptable, as is embroidery stitching. Participating quilters will receive a packet with guidelines for background and feature fabrics. The fabric patterns and colors would have been available in 1863, the year West Virginia became a state.
West Virginia quilters will stitch the squares together and quilt them.

First Fridays in Lewisburg
LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- The Greenbrier Valley Visitors Bureau and several Downtown Businesses are hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign at First Fridays After Five, 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 5. "Paint Lewisburg Pink" includes representatives from the Robert C. Byrd Clinic and Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, information booths, quilt displays, giveaways and "pink" themed items for sale. Proceeds go to the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program, providing health care for West Virginia women that are uninsured.
The Strum Sum Band begins at 5 p.m.
Harmony Ridge Gallery's pewter artist, Cynthia Webb, created an "Awareness Ribbon" cast pewter bookmark with a glass bead and satin ribbon and proceeds from the sales of these items will benefit the women's cancer-screening program. 209 W. Washington St., 304-645-4333.

Teacher's workshop series at Habitat ReStore
Habitat ReStore is offering a free workshop series for current teachers during open houses from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 3, 4 and 5 in the Homeowner Education and Community Center. On Oct. 3, create hall passes; on Oct. 4 create classroom planters; on Oct. 5 create supply organizers. All projects will be constructed from repurposed materials.
Friday's workshop will include a food and drink reception in honor of World Teacher Day and a cake made of school supplies door prize will be given away.
These workshops are free with school ID, but registration is required by calling Terry St Germain at 304-720-8733 ext. 3.
Also at the Habitat ReStore, in conjunction with Preservation Alliance of West Virginia and the Kanawha Valley Historical Society, a panel of historic preservation experts will be available for the day Oct. 27 to answer questions and consult with homeowners at no charge. Open to the public.

MU printmaking alumna at Birke Gallery
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall University's Birke Art Gallery features artwork by Rebecca Gilbert, a Philadelphia-based printmaker and Marshall alumna, in a solo exhibition "Treasure: Dirt and Stars" through Oct. 12.
Gilbert is an experienced printmaker who works primarily in the media of woodcut and intaglio. The exhibit features life-scale mounted reduction woodcuts, collagraphs, and drawings.
Gilbert earned her MFA in Printmaking/Book Arts in 2006 from The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Pa., where she was awarded the Elizabeth C. Robert Prize for Graduate Study in MFA Book Arts/Printmaking. She earned her BFA in Printmaking in 2000 from Marshall. She currently is a fellow in the Career Development program at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists, Art Futures Artist in Residence at Conwell Egan Catholic High School, and senior lecturer at the University of the Arts where she teaches printmaking.
Arts in Education funding
The Square Meal "Arts in Education Project Fund" proposal deadline has been extended to 6 p.m. Oct. 9. The presentation event will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 17 at Habitat for Humanity Community Room, 815 Court St. Catering will be by Ms. Groovy's Kitchen.
This grant is open to PreK-12 schools, daycares, after school programs and other youth organizations. Grant proposals should address project description, relevance/need, use of funds and timeline/success.
A selection panel will rate each proposal and ultimately four will be chosen to return and present their proposal (4-8 minutes) to a voting audience.
Audience members pay $16 to attend, $10 goes to the grant pool, $ 5 for food, $1 for Arts Council Kanawha Valley. A starting grant of $200 is provided by FestivALL.
