CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Film Festival fundraiser
A "Motion Picture Mixer" to benefit the West Virginia International Film Festival will take place from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at 226 1/2 Capitol St. (Ann Saville's loft above Taylor Books). Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at Taylor Books or with check or cash at the door.
Food, beverages, live music and films will highlight the evening.
The Fall Film Festival will take place Oct. 31-Nov. 10 at the West Virginia State University Capitol Center Theater, 123 Summers St.

"Beautiful McDowell County"
During ArtWalk on Oct. 18, Art Emporium will feature new works by Elaine McMillion and Betty Rivard.
"Beautiful McDowell County" highlights positive views of the county and its people. Elaine McMillion is the director of The Hollow Project (www.hollowthefilm.com), which uses interactive media to support county residents in sharing their lives, visions and plans for the future.
Betty Rivard is a fine art landscape photographer whose new book, "New Deal Photographs of West Virginia, 1934-1943" (www.wvupress.com), includes a chapter with historic photographs that were taken in the McDowell County by Marion Post Wolcott in September 1938.
"Beautiful McDowell County" will run Oct. 15 through Nov. 17.

Refuse container artists needed
FestivALL Charleston seeks applications from artists for a commission of utilitarian public art, Artist Designed Refuse Containers. The installation site will be along the riverside sidewalks of Kanawha Boulevard connecting Haddad Riverfront Park and Magic Island. Members of FestivALL's Public Art Selection Panel will review the qualifications of the artists who apply and the panel will interview finalists. One finalist will be asked to return for a public event to present the selected designs. The FestivALL Public Art selection panel, with input from the public, will chose one design from one artist to be awarded the commission.
Applications due by midnight Nov. 23. This project is open to all qualified artists 18 years or older and who are U.S. citizens or legal residents. A commission of $1,000 will be awarded to the selected designer. Artist is responsible for working with the Project Team to adjust selected design to meet fabrication specs and approve final design before fabrication begins. Artist is not responsible for fabrication, CAD designs, painting or installation.
There is no specific theme requirement. This is an open design call.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The receiving dates for the 12th Annual National Miniature Exhibition are approaching. All shipped work should be postmarked by Oct. 15. Shipping address is The Renaissance Art Gallery, c/o Fern Christian, 5481 James River Road, Huntington, WV 25704.

"Applying for a West Virginia Civil War Medal"
Greg Carroll, staff historian for the West Virginia Archives and History section, will present "Applying for a West Virginia Civil War Medal" at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center. The program is free and open to the public.
Carroll will explain the origin of Civil War medals and how they were authorized by the Legislature in 1866 as "tokens of respect" for Union veterans of West Virginia military units. Many were unclaimed, and eventually they were turned over to archives and history, which began a program to distribute the remaining medals to descendants who file a properly documented line of descent from the veteran to themselves.
A graduate of Marshall University, he has worked for the state Division of Culture and History in the archives and history section for more than 23 years. While there he has compiled 20 years working with Civil War medal claims.

Exhibition of Joe Henry's photographs
THOMAS, W.Va. -- A collection of photographs, "Canaan Valley and Dolly Sods Fall Color: Seasonal and Weather Transitions," by Joe Henry can be seen at Cottrill's Opera House on Front Street in Thomas through Oct. 26.
The rapidly moving weather fronts and weather changes that are so common to Dolly Sods and Canaan Valley help reveal the beauty of landscapes here. Much of the beauty observed at Dolly Sods and the Canaan Valley region occurs at boundaries between plant ecosystems, weather fronts, and seasons. These photographs depict sequences that bring these changes to life. The emphasis will be on fall colors.
Henry lives in Canaan Valley and has been photographing landscapes there for 30 years. His landscape photographs of the Dolly Sods and the Canaan Valley region have been widely recognized. In 2007, a five-month, one-man show of his Dolly Sods photographs was featured at the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History in Pittsburgh.

Cooper Gallery hosts John Cuthbert
LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- Works by John Cuthbert will be on exhibit at Cooper Gallery through Oct. 31.
Cuthbert is the curator of the West Virginia and regional history collection and director of the West Virginia Historical Art Collection at the West Virginia University Libraries. He is also author of "Early Art and Artists in West Virginia" and other publications. This exhibit will be his first showing of his paintings. The theme of this show is "A Little Slice of Winter in the West Virginia Mountains." Cuthbert uses oil and applies the paint with a throwaway plastic knife.
