Family hike
Charleston Montessori School will host a family hike on the Alice Knight Memorial Trail at Coonskin Park at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. This is the third of 10 hikes in the school's spring hike series, "Life's a Hike, One Trail at a Time."
5K run/walk
Terence Nabors Memorial 5K Run and Walk will be held at 2 p.m. March 30 in Nitro. Signups begin at 12:30 p.m. Proceeds from the race are going to a scholarship fund for Nitro High School students pursuing a career in the field of pharmacy. The Terence Nabors 5K Course is flat and fast. The start and finish line is located on Second Avenue in Nitro, beside of Nitro City Hall. The course loops through residential areas of Nitro. Awards go to the top three males and females overall; first and second place in each age division; and first place male and female walker. Entry fee is $15 for pre-registration and $20 on race day. Those who sign up by March 26 are guaranteed a T-shirt. A $5 off discount is offered for groups of five or more that mail applications in to Terence Nabors Memorial 5K Run and Walk, 4 Manhattan Drive, Nitro, WV 25143. Swim lessons
YMCA will offer Learn to Swim lessons for ages 6 months and older April 20 to June 7 at its location, 100 YMCA Drive. For information, visit ymcawv.org or call 304-340-3527.
Summer camp
Gifted children from across the state and the country can get a taste of what "real college life" is like in the Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program's summer camp held June 16-29 on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College. Students in grades 5 through 12 are eligible. The program offers advanced classes in astronomy, physics, higher math, literature, creative writing, computer programming and history. Students live in the dormitory, eat and attend classes on campus, and are supervised by college-age counselors who serve as guides and mentors. Applications will be accepted up until the first day of camp. Pre-registration is recommended and a $200 deposit is required.
