'Super 8' DVD contest

From now through Tuesday's DVD release of "Super 8," the West Virginia Film Office will give away daily prize packs (which include a copy of the movie) through the office's Facebook and Twitter pages. There's also a grand prize featuring a weekend in Weirton with complimentary lodging, dining and a personal tour, documented by a professional photographer, of filming locations.

Figure skating event

The Charleston Figure Skating Club hosts the fourth annual Mountain State Synchro Skate competition Saturday, beginning at 9:45 a.m., at the South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena at Trace Fork on Corridor G. Beginners through collegiate-level skaters from 13 teams from West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland and North Carolina will compete. Admission is free. Call 304-744-4423.

Soup and art sale

Unity of Kanawha Valley, 804 Myrtle Road, will host a soup and art sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Artwork includes beaded jewelry, framed photography and a variety of hand-painted mandalas and paintings Homemade soups, cornbread, drinks, and desserts also will be sold. Call 304-345-0021.

W.Va.'s Finest finals this weekend

We were mistaken in the date of the West Virginia's Finest talent competition semifinals and finals listed in the Nov. 10 gazz. Those will be held Saturday in the theater at Tamarack. Winners will be chosen in seven categories.

The first semifinal, including a performance by 2008 country winner Kathy Woolwine, begins at 11:30 a.m. The second semifinal, featuring 2009 R&B winner Melissa McKinney, is at 2:15 p.m. The top three acts in the youth categories and the top two in each genre will advance.

The finals, hosted by Dreama Denver, begin at 6:30 p.m. Gospel singer J Fraze will perform, and there will be guest appearances by gospel singer Steve O and John "Some Kind of Wonderful" Ellison, plus a video greeting from Landau Eugene Murphy Jr.

A free after party begins at 10 p.m. at McBee's Irish Pub, 313 Neville St., Beckley. Lady D and MI$ will perform.
