CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Earlier this month, the Gazette-Mail reported on the plight of a drive-in movie theater in Mount Zion. With the movie industry's announcement of the discontinuation of 35 mm film, Mt. Zion Drive In Theater & Restaurant and other theaters across the country face the choice of either paying the often insurmountable cost of switching to a digital projection system or closing their doors.
Automaker Honda has stepped in to save five of the nation's drive-ins by funding their conversion to digital. Honda is conducting a contest via social media; the five drive-ins with the most votes in the contest will receive new digital projectors.
Contestants design videos or slideshows detailing the history of their drive-in and pleading for community involvement to save them. The contestants are using social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to share their stories and to encourage people to vote and share.
The public can vote for Mt. Zion daily through Sept. 9, by visiting www.projectdrivein.com or by texting "vote8" to 444999. Everyone can vote twice a day: once by text message and once by visiting the website.
