CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- With Valentine's Day only 10 days away, love is in the air. Celebrate with these five timeless love songs:

5. "I'll Stand By You," The Pretenders

A classic ballad and one of the best known songs by The Pretenders, "I'll Stand By You" is all about devotion to the person you love. In the chorus, singer Chrissie Hynde declares, "I'll stand by you/I'll stand by you/Won't let nobody hurt you/I'll stand by you/Take me into your darkest hour/And I'll never desert you/I'll stand by you."

4. "I Got You Babe," Sonny & Cher

Who knew that Sonny Bono's alleged effort to capitalize on the then-popular word "babe" would result in one of the greatest love songs in the history of music? Nothing in life is more important than love, and regardless of your financial wealth, you'll always be rich when you have love. That may be a cliché, but it's a cliché for a reason: It's true. And Bono nailed that feeling with lyrics like "They say our love won't pay the rent/Before it's earned our money's all spent/I guess that's so, we don't have a pot/But at least I'm sure of all the things we got/Babe/I got you babe/I got you babe."

3. (tie) "I've Just Seen a Face" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand," both by The Beatles

I'm sure at least a third of The Beatles' songs are love songs, but none are greater than these two, which is why they tie for third place. "I've Just Seen a Face" captures the excitement of love at first sight, opening with the verse "I've just seen a face/I can't forget the time or place/where we just met/She's just the girl for me/and I want all the world to see we've met." "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is about longing for someone you've fallen head over heels for; it's a song about puppy love, with lyrics like "Yeah you've got that something/I think you'll understand/When I say that something/I want to hold your hand."

2. "My Heart Will Go On," Celine Dion

Considered by many to be the greatest love song of all time, Celine Dion's theme to the cinematic blockbuster "Titanic" proved to be a phenomenal success. True love never dies, even if a lover does. Though it's hard to drag yourself through the pain and sorrow of losing a love, metaphorically or otherwise, it's only by accepting that you're strong enough to continue living that you will get through the grief. Dion perfectly captured that sentiment with the song's chorus: "Near, far, wherever you are/I believe that the heart does go on/Once more you open my door/And you're here in my heart/And my heart will go on and on."

1. "Chasing Cars," Snow Patrol

How can this song by indie band Snow Patrol beat Celine Dion's classic? Well, not only are its lyrics more meaningful, but it's also just about as pure as a love song could possibly be. It acknowledges that the word "love" is overused and has lost its meaning over the years: "Those three words/Are said too much/They're not enough." It also reminds you that the concept of love is extremely easy to grasp: "All that I am/All that I ever was/Is here in your perfect eyes/They're all I can see." And its chorus asks a simple question that is perhaps the most accurate concept of love ever written: "If I lay here/If I just lay here/Would you lie with me and just forget the world?"
