Members of the Charleston Area Shag Society cut a rug at the group's recent Valentine's Day dance. The club, which averages 125 members annually, meets every Thursday at the Charleston Moose Lodge for shag lessons and dancing. Kevin and Dee Twohig (front right) are the group's dance instructors.

In addition to the weekly dances, CASS has four big events each year: the Shamrock Shag Dance, Shaggin' on the Boulevard, a Halloween dance and a Christmas dance.

This year's Shamrock Shag Dance runs 7 to 11 p.m. March 17. Reservations are $25 and can be made by calling club president Reba Mitchell at 304-541-8881 or treasurer Amy Rawlings at 304-346-4742.

Shaggin' on the Boulevard is June 15 and 16. It features dances both evenings as well as workshops by world class, multi championship dancers Sam and Lisa West. Email wvshagi...@wvshag.com for more information.

In addition to the Charleston events, most of the club members travel to events held by the state's other clubs. And their travel extends beyond state lines, too.

Many members -- at least half, by Moore's estimation -- attend Myrtle Beach's Spring Safari in April and Fall Migration in September. These 10-day celebrations host thousands of people from all over the country and even some international visitors. Plus, at an early February dance, several regulars were absent because they were on a shag cruise together.

"You meet friends from all over the U.S. At every dance you go to, you know people. You feel welcome," Moore said. "It's a good bond."

That bond was something all the club's members talked of at a recent dance, and it's something they're happy to extend to new faces. One good thing about shag dancing is that these new faces can come alone or in pairs and groups.

"Shag is not like ballroom dancing where you have to have a partner," Twohig said.

"We welcome anyone who wants to come," added her husband, Kevin. "We feed off [new members'] energy; it keeps us going."

Moore noted that she doesn't have a regular partner. "You all know the same dance, so you can get up and dance with whomever," she said. "The more people you dance with, the more seasoned you become."

But beware: shag dancing is addictive. Moore has had both her knees replaced, and that hasn't stopped her dancing.

"I'll always be a shagger," she said. "Even when I'm old and arthritic."
