Festival of Colors

From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, New Vrindaban will host a Festival of Colors at the Palace of Gold, 3759 McCreary's Ridge Road, Moundsville. The event celebrates a tradition dating back thousands of years in India.

Every two hours, there will be a unified "color throwing," where brightly colored organic starch is thrown into the air. There also will be live music throughout the day and a meal from an Indian gourmet vegetarian cook.

Calligraphy exhibit

"Expressions in Word: Calligraphers and Poets" is an exhibit featuring 31 calligraphic art pieces inspired by poems written by West Virginians. It's on display in the Culture Center's Balcony Gallery beginning with a 6 p.m. reception Monday. It's up through Veteran's Day.

The exhibit also includes calligraphy tools that have been used since medieval times, five basic letterforms, and samples of historic documents written in calligraphy. Additionally, there are videotaped demonstrations and a brief history of Western writing.

'The Birds' screening

A newly restored print of Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 classic "The Birds" will screen at 2 and 7 p.m. Wednesday at Great Escape Nitro and Cinemark Huntington Mall. The event also features an exclusive interview by Turner Classic Movies' Robert Osborne with Tippi Hedren, who discusses her experience with the film, as well as archived on-set interviews with Rod Taylor and Suzanne Pleshette.

The Marshall Artists Series presents "An Evening with John Legend" at 8 p.m. Sept. 20 at Huntington's Keith Albee Theater. The event is a lecture/performance hybrid where Legend will perform three to four of the hits that have won him nine Grammy Awards, as well as talk about social justice and poverty in America. Legend created the Show Me Campaign, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting poverty around the world.

Glenn Beck comedy stage show, "TheBlaze Presents Glenn Beck Unelectable 2012," screens live at 8 p.m. Sept. 20 at Cinemark Huntington Mall. Blues competition seeks bands

Sept. 21 is the deadline for blues acts to submit applications for the West Virginia Blues Society's sixth annual Blues Competition, on Oct. 13. The contest is open to bands, solo/duo acts and youth performers. Winners receive cash prizes and a sponsorship to the 2013 International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

Murder mystery dinner theater

The Greenhouse of Teays Valley, in association with the Murder and Merriment Interactive Murder Mystery Theatre Troupe, will host "Dead Man's Hand," a murder mystery dinner theater on Sept. 21 and 22. Performances, themed around a deadly poker tournament, begin at 7 p.m. each night. The evening includes a specially catered dinner and the possibility to earn prizes for solving the mystery correctly.
