New Sounds, Sept. 27, 2012: Michael Winograd; Kreidler
" Bessarabian Hop"
Michael Winograd
With renowned clarinetist Michael Winograd on the lickin' stick, new klezmer meets old -- with all its fun, melancholy energy and schmaltz. Klezmer, the music of Eastern European Jews, has become synonymous with throw-down parties, and while Winograd focuses more on the melodic than the manic, the trademark minor-key songs, fleshed out with accordion and trombone, are beautifully evocative. If this music whets your whistle, chug some Red Bull and check out Fanfare Ciocarlia, a simply amazing 12-piece Balkan Brass Band from Romania.
"Den"
Kreidler
www.bureau-b.com
German aestheticists Kreidler have released 11 discs to date as well as remixing industrial and Krautrocking vets like Faust and Einsturzende Neubauten. "Den" features 10 soundscapes that are, by turns, spacy and atmospheric (Brian Eno and Robert Fripp being obvious touchstones). They're filled with analog squishes and robotic filagrees, textured vistas circa Bowie's "Low" and the wonderfully dark panoramas that employ just enough rhythm and dissonance to keep you from nodding off.
