Clay Center offers Summer Discovery camps

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Clay Center will offer several children's camps this summer. All require advance registration, and many fill up before the registration deadline. Grade level indicated is the grade children will be this fall. Call 304-561-3570 or visit www.theclaycenter.org.

The camps are:

Filmmaking: The Sequel: 9 a.m. to noon July 16-20. Grades 3-7. Learn about filmmaking, makeup and special effects by scripting, costuming and creating a (nonscary) zombie film to premiere the last day of camp. Fee: Clay Center members $65, nonmembers $75. Registration deadline: July 9.

Set the Stage: 1 to 4 p.m. July 23-27. Grades 3-7. Learn improvisation, playwriting, directing and acting from actress Leah Turley. Camp ends with an original performance. Fee: Members $65, nonmembers $75. Registration deadline: July 16.

Seeds and Sprouts: 9 to 11 a.m. July 24-27. Grades 1-4. Play interactive games, investigate soil critters and raise fresh veggies in the Clay Center garden. Fee: Members $45, nonmembers $55. Registration deadline: July 17.

Performance Prep for Teens: 6 to 9 p.m. July 27-28. Grades 8-12. Learn about stage presence and audition techniques from Turley. Fee: members $30, nonmembers $40: Registration deadline: July 20.

Artful Endeavors: July 31-Aug. 3. 10 a.m. to noon for grades K-2; 1 to 3 p.m. for grades 3-6. Create works in the style of artists like Van Gogh, Michelangelo and Jackson Pollock. Fee: Members $45, nonmembers $55. Registration deadline: July 24.

Space Camp: 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 7-10. Grades 2-6. Launch rockets, make craters, design a space suit and visit the Starlab portable planetarium. Fee: Members $45, nonmembers $55. Registration deadline: July 31.
