Plenty of fun at FestivALL: June 14-20 events

Special effects makeup artist RJ Haddy, who was a top finisher on the Syfy reality competition "Face Off" earlier this year, will give a demonstration on special effects and makeup artistry Saturday afternoon in Macy's Court at the Charleston Town Center mall.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- If you can't find anything to do in the capital city in the next 11 days, then you're not trying. With FestivALL, there are activities galore all over town. Here's a look at events Thursday through Wednesday. All are free unless noted. For more information, visit www.festivallcharleston.com.

ART

Teen art show: 5 p.m. Thursday through noon Monday. Works by Kanawha County middle and high school artists are on display and for sale in Macy's Court at the Charleston Town Center mall.

Musical easels: 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Local artists draw or paint scenery at the Lee Street Triangle, accompanied by local street musicians. Whenever the music stops, they switch easels.

Public Paint-by-Numbers: Saturday through June 24. Local artists will be at various FestivALL locations with large-scale paintings of nearby scenes. Stop by and paint on one for 5 minutes.

Art parade: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Visual artists, performers, musicians, bicyclists, roller skaters and local organizations take a route that runs on Capitol Street from Kanawha Boulevard to Capitol Market.

Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School: Noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Draw live models at the Lee Street Triangle. Art supplies are provided or bring your own.

RJ Haddy workshop: 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. "Face Off" finalist RJ Haddy will demonstrate special effects and makeup artistry in Macy's Court at the Charleston Town Center mall.

Art/architecture walking tour: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Guides explain the history behind landmarks and public art in downtown Charleston. The tour starts at the Lee Street Triangle. For more on the event, see the June 15 Charleston Gazette.

Art auction: 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Original works will be auctioned at this East End Main Street StreetWorks benefit at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 301 Piedmont Road. Ted Brightwell is the auctioneer, and local musicians will perform. Tickets are $25 and include beer, wine and hors d'oeuvres.

MUSIC

MusicWorks: 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Performers celebrate "the music of work and the work of music" at Capitol Roasters, 160 Summers St. Sets are 30 minutes. Acts are (in order of appearance) Mark and Micah Atkinson, Raj Pongsugree with Rick Perdue, Paul Callicoat with Jay Oakes, Emily Burdette, Andy Park with Jamie Adkins, Julie Adams with Steve Hill, John Lilly (who also emcees), Tracy Miller, T. Paige Dalporto, Uncle Eddie & Robin with Greg Pawlack and Sasha Colette.

Brian Diller and the Ride: 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The popular local rock band from the '80s reunites for the first time in more than 20 years at Haddad Riverfront Park. Read an interview with Diller in the A&E section of wvgazette.com.

Drum circle: 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Some instruments might be available at this Magic Island event, but you're advised to bring your own. (Rain location is the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 520 Kanawha Blvd. W.)

RCCR Gospel Fest: 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Area gospel singers perform in a benefit for the Religious Coalition for Community Renewal at Kanawha United Presbyterian Church, 1009 Virginia St. E. Tickets are $10. For more on the event, see the Community section of the June 16 Saturday Gazette-Mail.

Charleston Civic Chorus: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The group performs solos and choral arrangements of popular songs by Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin and others at the Charleston Baptist Temple on the corner of Quarrier and Morris streets.

Mayor's Concert: 8 p.m. Wednesday. Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. headlines this Clay Center event, which doubles as a West Virginia Day celebration. Other performers are Johnny Staats and the Bob Thompson Unit. Tickets are $25, $35 and $45. Call 304-561-3570 or visit www.theclaycenter.org.
