CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Eleven dancers from the Columbia Classical Ballet take the stage Friday and Saturday with the Charleston Ballet to bring the West Virginia premiere of "La Bayadere The Temple Dancer" to Charleston.
Dancers in the full-length ballet, set in exotic India, portray the story of a love triangle between a temple dancer, a noble warrior and the beautiful daughter of a wealthy man.
Choreographed to a score by Minkus, "La Bayadere" was first performed in 1877. Its second act is one of the most well known in ballet repertoire.
Several of the dancers with the Columbia Classical Ballet in South Carolina are natives of Japan, Korea, the Ukraine and Hungary and bring an international flair to the performance.
"This is a really big ballet. It's the first time it's been performed in this state," said Charleston Ballet director Kim Pauley.
"La Bayadere" will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center Theater. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. Call 304-342-6541 or visit thecharlestonballet.com.
